My Story:

In my early 50’s I started to experience changes in my body and mood. On my 50th birthday, I was in great health – the fittest I had ever been, fit, strong, slim, newly in love and happy. I was on a complete new learning curve starting a PT business with my new husband. I was saying to myself – I have a second chance, life No. 2 after losing my husband of over 25 years to cancer and a son on the Austism Spectrum who was now thriving. My kids were loved and we were all benefitting, physically and mentally.

Then the menopause symptoms started, hot flushes, weight gain, night sweats, mood swings, interrupted sleep, anxiety, stress and so many more symptoms. I had no one to ask, mum had passed away a few years earlier and my sisters wasn’t going through any changes.

I was questioning the older ladies at our studio and that was when my search began for answers and I deep dived into all I could find on the topic. I started with working on losing the 10kgs I’d put on and from there I started reading more and more about peri/menopause and there was not a lot of information. I’d asked my doctor who told me that I was ‘probably’ in menopause and to take some Evening Primrose Oil – it did nothing! And HRT – I’d heard it increased your chances of breast cancer.

It was during this time that having our own PT Studio, I realised very early on that prescribing exercise is only one part of living a healthy life and my husband JC had opened up a new world to me beyond exercise. We talked and I learnt about the food we eat, the importance of good sleep, movement and how living a life of good health and wellbeing improves the chances of living a long and healthy life – longevity.

The greatest discovery was researching articles, reading books and speaking to other women about what was happening to our bodies during or 40’s & 50’s and the stages and changes that occur to us during perimenopause and menopause. And, what we could do to minimise the symptoms, which for 20% may be nothing to the 20% experiencing debilitating changes to the rest of us somewhere in between.

And living a healthy lifestyle is key to this natural stage we women will all go through and there are many other ways to support it such as MHT, exercise, reducing stress and having loving, supportive relationships and connection with others. Every woman is different and so is their journey. But if we know what is happening and how we can manage our health and wellbeing through this time we can minimise the impact and manage the symptoms to live in good health. And this is how I’m now living, full of energy, health and vitality.
